Definition of SIRS According to Symptoms
— (American College of Chest Physicians and Society of Critical Care Medicine)
Two or more of the following:
- Core temperature > 38°C (> 100.4°F) or < 36°C (< 96.8°F)
- Elevated heart rate (> 90 beats/min)

Respiratory:
- Respiratory rate > 20 breaths/min
- paCO2 < 32 mm Hg, OR
- Mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory process

WBC count:
- > 12,000/mm3
- < 4,000/mm3, OR
- > 10% immature neutrophils
